Start the RV Season Strong
January is the perfect time to reset your RV maintenance habits so you can avoid expensive repairs once camping season arrives. Even if your rig is in storage, these simple checks help protect your investment year-round.
1. Test All Safety Devices
Smoke alarms, CO detectors, and propane detectors should be tested monthly. Replace batteries and check expiration dates.
2. Check Battery Health
Your house batteries lose charge even in storage. Verify water levels (if applicable), check for corrosion, and recharge regularly.
3. Inspect Roof & Seals
Cold weather can shrink sealants. A quick January roof inspection prevents spring leaks.
4. Run Your Generator
Exercise generators monthly under load to prevent carburetor problems.
5. Flush & Check Water System (If Not Winterized)
Look for signs of freezing, leaks, or pressure loss.
6. Look for Rodent Intrusion
Check basement compartments, wiring runs, and heater ducts.
7. Check Tire Condition
Flat spots, low pressure, and dry rot are common in winter.
8. Test HVAC Systems
Run your furnace, heat pump, and AC (if warm enough). Listen for unusual noises.
9. Inspect Electrical Connections
Look for loose wires, corrosion, or burnt-smelling outlets.
10. Review Your RV Tool Kit
Make sure you have fuses, a water pressure regulator, spare hose washers, and basic tools.
