Lippert Level Up System Not Working

A Lippert Level Up system that retracts the jacks but will not continue leveling can involve more than the hydraulic pump or jacks. Voltage, sensors, wiring, calibration and control components all play a part in automatic leveling operation.

Quick answer: If a Lippert Level Up system powers on but will not complete normal leveling operation, the problem may involve battery voltage, the leveling sensor, wiring, calibration, controller inputs or the hydraulic system. Testing should determine which part of the system is actually preventing operation before parts are replaced.

The Customer Complaint

On one MilTech RV service call, the Level Up system would retract the leveling jacks but would not proceed through normal leveling operation.

Because the hydraulic system could still move the jacks, the diagnosis did not begin by assuming the hydraulic pump or all of the jacks had failed.

Common Reasons a Level Up System May Stop Working

Low Battery Voltage

Hydraulic leveling systems require a strong 12-volt electrical supply. Low voltage or poor connections can interfere with normal operation.

Leveling Sensor Problem

The control system relies on leveling information to determine RV position. A sensor or sensor-circuit fault can prevent automatic leveling from operating normally.

Calibration Issue

Incorrect zero-point or leveling calibration can affect automatic leveling behavior and may require the appropriate recalibration procedure.

Wiring or Connector Fault

Loose connectors, damaged harnesses, corrosion or poor grounds can interrupt communication or power between system components.

Hydraulic Problem

Pump, valve, fluid, cylinder or hydraulic-circuit problems can prevent one or more jacks from extending or retracting correctly.

Control-System Fault

Touch pads, controllers and related inputs should be evaluated along with the rest of the system instead of replaced based only on the symptom.

What We Found on This Level Up Service Call

The system was able to retract the jacks, but normal leveling operation would not continue.

The leveling sensor installation and related circuit were checked, and the system was reset and recalibrated. The problem remained.

Diagnostic testing pointed to a failed leveling sensor rather than a failure of the hydraulic jacks themselves.

A replacement sensor was recommended based on the findings.

This is another example of why a leveling-system problem should be diagnosed before expensive hydraulic or electronic components are replaced.

Why the Leveling Sensor Matters

Automatic leveling depends on the system knowing the position of the RV. The leveling sensor provides information the control system uses during automatic operation.

If that information is incorrect or unavailable, the system may power up and still be unable to perform the expected automatic-level sequence.

Why a Factory Reset Does Not Fix Every Leveling Problem

A reset or recalibration can correct certain configuration or zero-point concerns, but it cannot repair a failed sensor, broken wire, hydraulic failure or damaged component.

If the same symptom remains after the correct reset or calibration procedure, additional testing is needed.

  • House-battery voltage and electrical supply
  • Voltage while the leveling system is operating
  • Touch-pad operation and displayed faults
  • Leveling sensor and related wiring
  • Controller connections
  • Ground and power connections
  • Hydraulic pump operation
  • Fluid level and visible leaks
  • Jack extension and retraction behavior
  • System calibration when appropriate

The exact diagnostic procedure depends on the Level Up configuration installed on the RV and the symptoms present at the time of service.

What If All the Jacks Retract but Nothing Happens Next?

That symptom is useful information. It shows that at least part of the electrical and hydraulic system is capable of operating.

Diagnosis can then focus on what the controller needs before moving to the next step in the leveling sequence, including sensor information, system inputs, calibration and related wiring.

Does a Level Up Error Mean the Touch Pad Is Bad?

Not necessarily. A fault displayed at the touch pad can be caused by another component elsewhere in the system.

The touch pad, controller, sensor, wiring, electrical supply and hydraulic operation should be considered as parts of one system.

Safety note: Hydraulic leveling systems can move an RV rapidly and develop substantial hydraulic pressure. Never work beneath an RV supported only by leveling jacks, and do not place hands or body parts near moving leveling components.
