Why an RV Toilet Can Become Clogged
Unlike a residential toilet, many RV toilets discharge through a relatively short pipe directly into the black holding tank.
Waste and toilet paper can accumulate if there is not enough water in the tank, if the tank is left open while connected to sewer, or if material builds up beneath the toilet opening.

Waste or paper can accumulate between the toilet and black tank, preventing normal flow.
Black-Tank Pyramid
Solid waste can build upward from the bottom of the tank beneath the toilet opening.

What Is a Black-Tank Pyramid?
A black-tank pyramid is a buildup of solid waste and toilet paper that forms beneath or near the toilet inlet.
This often happens when there is too little liquid in the tank or when the black-tank valve is left open during extended campsite use.
Liquids drain away while solids remain behind, allowing buildup to become progressively larger.
Should the Black-Tank Valve Be Left Open?
In most normal RV use, the black-tank valve should remain closed until there is enough liquid in the tank to produce a strong flush when the tank is dumped.
Keeping adequate water in the black tank helps waste remain suspended rather than drying and accumulating on the tank floor.
Why Tank Sensors Can Read Full After Dumping
RV holding-tank sensors can be affected by residue or waste buildup on the tank walls.
A false full reading does not always mean the tank is actually full. Professional tank cleaning may improve sensor accuracy when buildup is the cause.
