RV A/C Breaker Keeps Tripping

An RV air conditioner that repeatedly trips the circuit breaker may have an electrical, compressor, capacitor, motor, wiring or incoming power problem. Repeatedly resetting the breaker without finding the cause can lead to additional damage.

Quick answer: If your RV A/C breaker keeps tripping, the breaker is usually reacting to excessive current, a short circuit or another abnormal electrical condition. The A/C and its power supply should be tested before replacing the breaker or air conditioner.

Why Does an RV A/C Trip the Breaker?

A circuit breaker is designed to protect wiring and equipment when electrical current exceeds safe limits.

If an RV air conditioner repeatedly trips its breaker, something may be causing the unit to draw more current than the circuit should carry.

Common Causes

Compressor Problem

A compressor with an internal electrical fault or mechanical problem may draw excessive current and trip the breaker.

Failed Capacitor

A weak or failed capacitor can interfere with compressor or fan-motor startup and contribute to abnormal current draw.

Low Voltage

Low campground or RV voltage can make motors work harder and may contribute to excessive current or poor A/C performance.

Damaged Wiring

Loose, overheated or damaged electrical connections can create resistance, arcing or short-circuit conditions.

Fan-Motor Problem

A failing or mechanically restricted fan motor can draw more current than normal.

Breaker Problem

Circuit breakers can deteriorate, but a breaker should not be assumed defective until the electrical load and A/C system have been evaluated.

When Does the Breaker Trip?

The timing of the trip can provide useful diagnostic information.

Breaker Trips Immediately

An immediate trip may point toward a short circuit, wiring fault, failed electrical component or another high-current condition.

Breaker Trips When the Compressor Starts

If the fan operates but the breaker trips as the compressor attempts to start, testing may focus on the compressor starting circuit, capacitor, incoming voltage and compressor condition.

Breaker Trips After Running for a While

A delayed trip may involve overheating, excessive running current, voltage problems, motor issues or a breaker that is reacting to sustained electrical load.

What We Check During an RV A/C Electrical Diagnostic

  • Incoming shore-power voltage
  • A/C circuit voltage
  • Condition of the breaker and electrical connections
  • Visible wiring and terminal condition
  • Capacitor condition
  • Fan-motor operation
  • Compressor electrical condition
  • Compressor starting behavior
  • Operating current when appropriate
  • Signs of overheating or damaged components

The objective is to determine what is causing the excessive load rather than simply resetting or replacing the breaker.

Can Low Campground Voltage Trip an RV A/C Breaker?

Low voltage can contribute to air-conditioner problems because electric motors may draw more current or struggle to start when the supply voltage is inadequate.

The incoming electrical supply should be considered as part of the diagnosis, particularly when the problem happens only at certain campgrounds or power sources.

Should You Replace the Breaker?

Not automatically.

A breaker that repeatedly trips may be doing exactly what it was designed to do—protecting the circuit from an abnormal electrical condition.

Replacing the breaker without determining why it is tripping can leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Does a Tripping Breaker Mean the Compressor Is Bad?

No. Compressor failure is one possible cause, but capacitor problems, fan motors, wiring faults, low voltage, poor connections and other electrical conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Compressor condition should be determined through proper testing rather than by the breaker trip alone.

Electrical safety: Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that continues to trip. RV air conditioners operate on 120-volt AC power and contain capacitors that can retain an electrical charge after power is disconnected. Electrical diagnosis should be performed with appropriate procedures and equipment.

What About a Soft Start?

A properly selected soft-start device can reduce compressor startup demand and can be useful with certain generators or limited electrical supplies.

However, a soft start is not a repair for damaged wiring, a failing compressor, a defective capacitor or another existing electrical fault. The A/C should be diagnosed first if the breaker is already tripping.
