RV Awning Won’t Retract or Close
When a power RV awning will extend but will not retract—or will not move at all—the cause may involve the 12-volt power supply, switch, wiring, motor, awning arms or mechanical binding.
Common Reasons an RV Awning Won’t Retract
Low 12V Voltage
Power awning motors need adequate 12-volt power. Weak batteries, poor connections or voltage drop can cause slow or failed operation.
Awning Motor
The motor can wear out, fail internally or operate in one direction but not the other depending on the motor and circuit.
Switch or Control Problem
A failed wall switch, control module or related wiring may prevent the motor from receiving the correct command.
Damaged Awning Arm
Bent or damaged arms can place excessive load on the motor and prevent normal extension or retraction.
Mechanical Binding
Misalignment, damaged hardware or binding at the roller or arms can keep the awning from moving freely.
Loose Wiring
Loose connectors, damaged wires or poor grounds can create intermittent operation or complete loss of movement.
Awning Extends but Will Not Retract
If the awning operates normally in one direction but not the other, that symptom can help narrow the diagnostic path.
Depending on the awning design, the technician may evaluate the switch, wiring, motor circuit and control components to determine whether power is reaching the motor correctly in both directions.
Replacing the motor before checking the control circuit can result in replacing a good component.

- Awning-arm alignment

- Travel-lock or mechanical interference
The goal is to determine whether the failure is electrical, mechanical or a combination of both before recommending parts.
Why Voltage Testing Matters
An awning may have enough electrical power to make a clicking sound or attempt to move but still not have sufficient voltage under load for normal operation.
Measuring voltage while the awning motor is being commanded can help identify voltage drop, weak power supply or poor electrical connections.
What If the Awning Motor Only Works With an Override?
Some power awning systems provide an emergency or manual override method that can be used to retract the awning when normal electrical operation is unavailable.
Successful override operation can help with diagnosis, but it does not by itself identify whether the normal failure is caused by the motor, switch, wiring or controller.
Always follow the procedure specified for the particular awning model.
What If the Awning Arm Is Bent?
A bent or damaged awning arm changes the problem from a simple electrical diagnosis to a potential mechanical and travel-safety concern.
Continued motor operation against a damaged arm may place additional stress on the motor, roller tube, mounting hardware and the opposite awning arm.
Does an Awning That Won’t Move Need a New Motor?
Not necessarily.
A failed motor is one possibility, but a blown fuse, weak 12V supply, damaged switch, loose wiring, binding arm or control problem can produce the same basic complaint.
Testing the circuit before replacing the motor can help avoid unnecessary parts replacement.
