RV A/C Fan Runs but Compressor Won’t Start
When an RV air conditioner fan runs but the compressor will not start, the problem may involve the capacitor, incoming power, wiring, controls or the compressor itself. Proper testing is important before replacing parts.
The Customer Complaint
On this service call, the RV owner reported that the rooftop air conditioner was not cooling properly. The fan could operate, but the compressor was not starting as expected.
Because several electrical problems can create the same symptom, the diagnosis started with testing rather than immediately replacing the compressor or air-conditioning unit.
What Can Cause This Symptom?
Start or Run Capacitor
A failed or weakened capacitor may prevent the compressor from starting correctly.
Low or Incorrect Voltage
Poor campground power, wiring problems or voltage drop can keep an A/C compressor from starting normally.
Compressor Failure
Internal compressor damage or electrical winding problems can create similar symptoms and require additional testing.
The Diagnostic Process
A proper RV A/C diagnosis should look at the entire starting circuit. Depending on the equipment and symptoms, testing may include:
- Incoming 120-volt AC power
- Breaker and electrical connections
- Thermostat and control operation
- Capacitor condition
- Compressor resistance measurements
- Fan-motor operation
- Visible wiring or terminal damage
Measurements help separate a failed capacitor from other electrical or compressor-related problems.
What We Found
Testing on this service call pointed to a failed air-conditioner capacitor. Once the problem was confirmed, the appropriate replacement capacitor was identified and installed.
After the repair, the system was operated again to verify normal compressor and air-conditioner operation.

Why Capacitors Fail
RV air conditioners operate in demanding conditions. Rooftop equipment is exposed to heat, vibration, temperature changes and repeated compressor starts.
Capacitors can weaken or fail with age and use. In some cases the capacitor may swell, leak or show obvious physical damage. In other cases it may look normal and still fail electrical testing.
Does a Soft Start Prevent Capacitor Problems?
A properly selected RV A/C soft-start device can reduce the electrical demand associated with compressor startup and may improve operation when using limited campground power or certain generators.
A soft start does not repair a failed capacitor, damaged compressor, poor wiring or inadequate incoming power. Existing problems should be diagnosed before adding another component to the system.
